How Not To Lose Your Enthusiasm When Learning English

Saturday, March 30, 2013 JS Hanniffy 0 Comments

I've just visited Effortless English forum and intend to posting this article there but then I remember that I haven't posted anything related about learning English so I decide to share my ideas about how to keep your motivation while learning English.

I'm interested in sharing this due to some people in the forum sharing their failure feelings in learning English, that they have no progress yet with their English.

Effortless English is now bigger than four years ago, I see more new members now join the forum. They come from around the world with different levels of English and hoping only one thing from Effortless English: speak English fluently.

Judging People, Are You This Type of Person?

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 JS Hanniffy 1 Comments

"No, I'm not!" you might defense yourself when somebody ask you that question, and don't worry because most of us don't like to be categorized with this type.

I enjoy observing people and this just nature of my psychology knowledge. Recently, I like being on tweeter, enjoy reading people tweets give me a subject of assignment: Why like that and who is that.

It seems like online social networks today are 'the right' spot to express our nature-attention demands.

Yeah, it's real fun indeed. Some people like us and some don't. Tweets getting annoying for us when we disagree with the person's tweet. We respond it with a judgment. We hypocritically point at each others.

Most of us are so good when comes to judge somebody and what scary behinds of judging is when the message is meant to be for ourselves but we refuse and pretend that we're just (not) like them.

Five Things Women Must Have To Stay Healthy In The Sun

Monday, March 25, 2013 JS Hanniffy 2 Comments

Good weather today this morning in Jakarta after heavy raining yesterday the sunshine shows at last.

Speaking of weather, you know how the weather in Indonesia looks like, it's very humid! In the hot weather skins need more attention to prevent from burning or even skin cancer risks.

Scary huh? Yep.

So what do you need to prevent this?

Sun lotion. Instead of looking white lotion chose sun lotion that helps you more to protect your skins. - you definitely need this! There are different types of SPF according to your skin colour types. I use low SPF as I got tan skin, like 15 SPF. Make sure you chose the right product, specially if you put it on face.

Moisturiser. Apply moisturiser to your face before putting make up. Use this every time you need it as it can prevent your skin from being dried.

Lips gloss. Dry lips can be embarrassing sometimes as that makes your face looks unhealthy. Putting lipstick won't make the dry skin go away so get the lips gloss instead. Chose one with vitamins in it.

Hat or glasses. Always bring your glasses or hat to protect your face skin from direct sun.

Water. Always bring a bottle of mineral water. It prevents you from dehydration and it's scientific proof to prevent from a diseases.

Last but not least, appropriate your dress according to the weather. Don't be a fashion victim, like wearing boots in the 30 degrees. Enjoy the sun.

Online Shopping Business, Shall We?

Monday, March 25, 2013 JS Hanniffy 53 Comments

Since I arrived in Indonesia I've been observing the market here, quite high, specially the online business. We know Asian country is now becoming more famous   since the crisis economic hit America and Europe in 2008, and seems more foreign like to invest their money in Asia, and Indonesia is now being boosted by foreign investments.

However, while the economic here is boosting more people take its benefits by trying to have their own business. Let's say online shopping, is one of the trending business in the market that people like to do in Indonesia.

Some friends of mine have tried their business skills through online, Ratu De Blog, just recently launched Quiniemart, her online shopping business.

Online shopping business is a great way for those who prefer to be self-employee.

What are the things you need to prepare to start online shopping? Here are the steps:

1. What do you sell?
Think about what product that you think market will like it and few people have it. Be different as it will make you stand out from competitors.

2. Website
Must have a website as this online business. Get a good domain that will caught the attention. If you have small capital get one from Blogspot and change the to paid domain. Ask somebody to design your website theme according to what you sell.

3. Social networks
Have a social network account such as facebook and twitter is a must. The social network is a great and cheapest way to get people know about your brand.

4. Campaign your brand
Once the steps above done, campaign it! Tell people about your brand through a promo, like giving your customers special price for the special items in the promo, review service, give away, etc.

4. Friendly to anyone
If you do the business by your own then get more friendly to anyone who asks about your brands. The friendlier you're with them the higher is the traffic for your online business.

5. No Bad-mouth
You get the customers, your business get well and your customers start to share their experiences their bad experiences of other online shopping. Stay cool. Let them share it and take that for you to do better than competitors.

It's a peace of cake steps, so are you ready to have online business? Let's start it!

The Srikandi Blogger 2013 Award is Ready to Rock 'n' Roll

Saturday, March 23, 2013 JS Hanniffy 3 Comments

I guess people haven't heard about this award, neither do I. The idea of this award comes from a group online of women society in Indonesia, Kumpulan Emak Blogger, or well known as KEB, a quite popular of women community in media networks in Indonesia which also active promoting their events through networks society.

KEB is one of a leading online women community in Indonesia, having more than 800 members on Facebook and 1700 followers on Twitter. Seeing that they just celebrated their first society anniversary in January, these numbers are very significant.

What is Srikandi Blogger 2013 Award?
Inspired from the Srikandi's name and its story, and the technology invasion in life society,  KEB introduce and announce the Srikandi Blogger 2013 Award to their members and all women in Indonesia to participate the competition. Two most important requirements are the participants should be at least aged 20 and having active blog two years.

Are you in?

Fun, Positive, Genuine, Inspiring
Based on KEB mission to get Indonesian women to be more positive using social networks, they encourage women to write more on their blogs. Nothing is really sophisticated from most their writings, but their enthusiasms make them more than sophisticated women.

KEB is ready to spread their wings

What interests me is all the members of  this community comes from different backgrounds and ages. They actual meaning of the name of the site, KEB, is meant to be the community of blogger women. But the terms of Emak in Bahasa means a married woman, usually married women with kids. Surprisingly, there is also young female teenagers join this community.

These teenagers obviously don't mind being called Emak, don't they?

Whatever you do in life, the bottom line is to love what you do. We thank you Mira Sahid, the founder of KEB, for creating this community. You're rock Mak!

My Personality is Me, My Attitude Depends On You

Wednesday, March 20, 2013 JS Hanniffy 0 Comments

You might have heard my posting title above, it's everywhere on the internet. I love quotes, sometime words can influence your thoughts,  you know. The title above is quite interesting for a quote and I try to figure out what the meaning of it.

Here is the thought.

On some events people can become assertive but surely they don't have this type of attitude all the time. People might describe you as funny and easy going person. There you are in some people's view.

But people might get surprise about you in a different situation: "You're not like yourself buddy".

What you reckon when a cheerful person get annoyed?

When we say some people change but some keep the same, is this about attitude?

However, I love the quote below.

Happy lunch,

Tips: Raising Bilingual Kids - Indonesian English Parenting

Tuesday, March 19, 2013 JS Hanniffy 0 Comments

I got the idea to write this from a mother who I know from KEB (Kumpulan Emak2 Blogger), an online women community in Indonesia. Not sure what her problem was but she seemed worry about introducing second language to her children.

Her question was: "Should I delay my kids to learn English and focus more in Bahasa?"

I see that just not her who got worry for raising kids in more than one language, many Indonesian parents believe that introducing language in early age could delay the ability to develop their speaking. Well, if this is true then we have millions kids with oral problem.

Let The Kids Have Fun With The Language

Raising bilingual kids is not myth. I have my own experience in raising my kid with different languages and cultures. He's now 13 years old and speak more than two languages, apart from Bahasa, he speaks English, Javanese and Arabic almost fluently. How does he do it?

Children have nature ability to pick up 'things' quickly from their surrounding. I was so amazed by how my son learn different languages so quickly: He was just listening the natives.

I don't control my kid about what language he wants to speak. When he first learnt Javanese he was totally quite - did not speak at all or responding the natives, but after two weeks he spoke exactly like natives, this was when he was 10 yo.

One my favorite moment when he spoke two languages was when he 4 years old. He was brought to doctor who speak English. The doctor tried to make him comfortable by asking him to sing. He sang an English song, after finished the song the doctor asked my boy to sing a Bahasa song as well: he did it.

I believe kids not just have flexibility in their physical but also their brain is effortlessly learning a language. Sure that when one or two years old they don't speak quicker as the other toddlers that speak just one language but does not mean their oral ability undeveloped.

We might have heard that learning a language is now have other purposes other than about science? Yes, it's also learning humanity. In some point of views it does make sense.

Every language has different expression in their sentences, and that links to its culture as well. When your child said: "No, thank you", they just not learn English but also etiquette, so the opposite when they said: "Gak mau" (rarely in Bahasa said 'Gak mau' followed by 'Terimakasih') however, this acceptable in the culture.

Finally, I assume we, parents, don't have a choice not to teach our kids English. It's kind of life demands and for the sake of their future. Start it in early won't be a bad idea as it helps them to be more fluent in English.

How To Extend The SosBud Visa

Monday, March 18, 2013 JS Hanniffy 0 Comments

The third extension of  SosBud (Sosial Budaya) visa is pretty easy, just like the first one you apply but this time the Kanim must send your application to KanWil so gonna take a bit longer than the first one and the second.

I apply today in Immigration of South Jakarta and met a woman who was in the same purpose with me - applying the third visa extension.

Sample of SosBud visa

Different immigration might have different result on your application and to be honest I don't know why. People usually tell different story for the same purpose. My advise is try not to take the whole story as it will confuse you.

Here are some documents I bring for the visa extension:

  1. Permohonan Letter (from the sponsor), signed with materai below the sponsor's name
  2. Form of application
  3. Your original passport
  4. Copy of sponsor KTP
  5. Copy of your passport
  6. Copy or marriage certificate (if married)

Make the copy two for each document (I did this to make it easy the staff immigration). The third extension need to be sent to KanWil so make sure you have everything they need!

Go by yourself and get the information directly from the immigration office. You might heard negative story about whatever in immigration, again, don't take the whole thing as it sometimes make you lost.

I usually bring everything I need and hand it straight away to the staff without asking bla bla and it works, they don't ask me any question. Everything go well.

Don't forget to smile, be friendly with the staff. I like all the staff in South Jakarta in Mampang Prapatan, they are not just friendly but also very patient.
